Second HPV Vaccine

Yesterday, Time Magazine reported on the findings by the prestigious British medical journal, the Lancet, that a second newly-approved vaccine against the human papillomavirus (HPV), Cervarix, produced by GlaxoSmithKline, offers protection against the two major cancer-causing strains of HPV, (HPV-16 and HPV-18) for more than 6 years. HPV, as you probably know, causes cervical cancer. (I know personally of 3 women in their 40’s and 50’s who died of cervical cancer.)

Gardasil, from pharmaceutical giant Merck, is the first HPV vaccine. When my daughter turned 15 last year, I had her had her shots; pretty expensive though at close to Ringgit 1K. You moms, who are mulling these for your daughters, go talk to your gyne. There is a link at the comments section of the TIME article that offers a balancing view that basically says, “The jury is still out on the efficacy of these vaccines; why expose your child to more vaccines?” Of course, the flip view is: “By the time you know, you regret you didn’t because it is too late.”
