One Malaysian, One Tree

Last December, the Prime Minister announced at the 15th Conference of Parties to the UNFCC Malaysia’s commitment to voluntarily reduce carbon emissions by 40% by the year 2020. In support of this, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment have started a campaign — Greening the Earth: 1 Malaysian, 1 Tree — an effort to plant 26 million trees equal to the population of this country.

This is an absolutely great program. According to the Tree Canada Foundation, an “average” tree absorbs 200 kilograms of carbon over 80 years in an urban environment. So in Malaysia we would expect a carbon sink of about 433,000 tonnes a year when this 26 million trees are fully mature.

Yesterday I attended the state-level launching of this campaign at the Sabah State Legislative Assembly.
