Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs and “Freedom from Porn”

The internet media and blogosphere are abuzzed with Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs email exchange with Valleywag’s Ryan Tate, and most commented about his stance about “freedom from porn”. Many US-based commentators crowed in their self-righteous indignation about freedom of expression and unwelcome imposition of morals by Apple.

I think lost in the diatribes and blog chaff is the real intent of Steve Jobs and Apple. We know, and certainly Steve Jobs knows, that the internet is awashed with porn; like it or not, it will always be ubiquitous, and that includes in ipad’s Safari. Even my dog, Walter, could tap his paws on my mac and hey, porn will be delivered in a jiffy. (I mean no disrespect to Walter’s or dogkind’s intelligence, of course.) In a land where almost everyone wears Mao Tse Tung jackets, the guy with the sharp Armani suit is going to stand out. In Marketing 101, they call that “branding”.

“Freedom from porn” is one facet of Apple’s obvious push at branding Apps Store.
